Rated depth and deploy time matter more than headline price. A barrier that seals to 900 mm is useless at an opening that takes 1.2 m of water, and a barrier that needs 30 minutes to assemble is useless where the warning arrives 10 minutes ahead of the water. Each bag stores flat at 270 g and swells to 18–22 kg within 2–3 minutes of contact with fresh water, forming a barrier 600 × 400 × 120 mm. No sand, shovels, or filling. A single pack of 4 covers most standard doorways; two layers of two packs protects to roughly 240 mm.

Their real advantage is filling the irregular gaps rigid panels cannot bridge — roller door bases, window wells, and drainage entry points. The limitation is that they are single use: once activated they cannot be deactivated, so replacement is an ongoing cost each season.

PVC-coated Oxford cloth stretched across a reinforced steel pipe frame that telescopes from 150 mm to 1,300 mm wide. Water pressure on the upstream face presses the base down against concrete or pavers, forming a watertight seal without anchors. Link units end-to-end for spans wider than a single pack.

At 5.3 kg per pack they fold flat for cupboard or boot-of-car storage and set up without tools. Because the frame adjusts to irregular shapes, they are usually the practical choice for side entries and garden gates where a rigid panel would need custom fabrication.

Marine-grade aluminium panels made to measure for the opening. There is no standard size: the width is built to the entrance and the height is set by how many 300 mm panels go in, so 300, 600 or 900 mm and upwards. Rubber gaskets and compression seals along the base and side posts close the barrier against the frame, and no water passes through.

The panels slide into the anchor channel by hand — one person, under 10 minutes, no tools on the day — and lift straight back out once the water is gone, so the doorway or driveway is clear for normal use in between. Anchor channels are installed once and stay in place. Every set is quoted per opening after a measurement.

The point of these is that nothing gets installed. No anchor channel, no drilling, nothing fixed to the building: the panels stand freely where they are placed, so you set them across the opening when water is coming and take them away when it is gone. Panels sold online are 750 mm high, with 1,000 mm and 1,200 mm available on enquiry.

Water-level sensing raises the barrier at a configured threshold; remote or central controls lower and reset it. This is the only option for a site where nobody is reliably present to deploy a manual barrier — basement car parks, after-hours loading docks, unstaffed infrastructure.

Each installation is custom-engineered around the opening, flood conditions, electrical supply, and control requirements, so a site assessment always precedes a quotation.

The barrier rises on the floodwater's own buoyancy and resets by gravity — no power, sensors, or operator. That makes it the alternative wherever an automatic gate's electrical supply is unavailable or not dependable: river frontages, stormwater outlets, and remote vehicle entries.

A stainless-steel exterior over a polyurethane internal structure carries wall-mounted waterproof sealing membranes, and applicable engineered configurations support vehicle loading to 20 tonnes. A site assessment confirms local water-flow conditions first, because the mechanism needs suitable flow to activate.

How to choose

Three questions decide the answer.

1. What kind of flooding reaches your site?

The mechanism sets how fast you have to respond and how high the water goes. River flooding rises slowly and usually carries 6–48 hours of Bureau of Meteorology warning, which is enough time for any barrier type including a first-time anchor installation. Flash flooding and stormwater overload arrive in 30 minutes or less, often with street ponding as the only visible warning — only a pre-positioned or automatic system is realistic. Coastal storm surge brings sustained hydrostatic load and wave action beyond what portable barriers are designed for, and needs an engineered system and a site assessment.

2. What openings do you need to seal?

Count every opening, not just the front one. A shopfront with two entries needs two sets — protecting one and leaving the other open protects nothing.

3. How much warning will you realistically have?

The Bureau issues three escalating tiers, and each maps to a different deployment window. Flood Watch, 12 or more hours ahead, allows any barrier type plus first-use anchor installation and coverage of secondary openings. Flood Warning, 2–12 hours ahead, still allows a full aluminium panel installation; Oxford barriers and sandbags deploy in minutes. Emergency Warning, under 2 hours and sometimes under 30 minutes, only suits a system already in place — an assembled demountable set can be raised in under 10 minutes, but a first-time installation cannot.

Two further questions change the answer once the type is narrowed. Is the site attended? If nobody is reliably present when water arrives — a rental, an after-hours warehouse, a basement car park — a manual barrier of any kind will not be deployed, and an automatic or passive system is the only thing that works. How often does the property flood? Annual or biennial exposure justifies a reusable rigid barrier regardless of upfront cost; once-a-decade exposure often makes sandbags or Oxford barriers the lower total cost.

Upfront price and cost of ownership rank the options differently. A single-use product is cheap once and expensive every season; a reusable panel set is the reverse. The right comparison is cost per deployment across the years you expect to own the property.

The figure that reframes all of these is the cost of doing nothing. The Insurance Council of Australia puts the average residential flood claim at $30,000–$50,000. Properties on low-lying ground within 2 km of a river, creek, or drainage channel carry materially elevated risk. The Bureau of Meteorology flood warning service publishes historical flood extent for most catchments, which is the practical first check before choosing barrier type and height.

Do flood barriers work against every type of flooding?+

No single type does. Slow-rising river floods allow time for a full aluminium panel installation. Flash flooding and stormwater overload give 30 minutes or less, so only a pre-positioned or automatic system is realistic. Are flood barriers covered by home insurance in Australia?+

Most standard home and contents policies do not cover the purchase cost of a flood barrier.
